We teach the traditional martial art of Tang Soo Do whose routes date back some 2,000 years. Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art that incorporates elements of traditional Korean martial arts, as well as influences from Chinese kung fu and Japanese karate. Tang Soo Do is a system of combat and self-defence techniques that has deep historical roots and has been passed down through generations. It has a well-established and structured curriculum, including specific forms (kata), sparring and self-defence techniques, and philosophies that have been preserved and handed down over a long period.
Here are some key components and elements typically included in the practice of Tang Soo Do:
.Hand and Foot Techniques: Tang Soo Do includes a variety of hand techniques such as punches, strikes, and blocks, as well as an array of kicks. Practitioners learn to execute these techniques with precision, power, and proper body mechanics.
.Forms (Kata): Like many traditional martial arts, Tang Soo Do places a significant emphasis on forms or kata. Forms are predetermined sequences of movements that simulate various attack and defence scenarios. Practitioners use forms to develop and refine techniques, stances, and overall martial skill.
.Sparring: Tang Soo Do incorporates controlled sparring as a way for practitioners to practice and apply their techniques against a live, resisting opponent. Sparring can involve both hand and foot techniques and is typically done with protective gear to ensure safety.
.Self-Defense Techniques: Tang Soo Do includes practical self-defence techniques designed to defend against common attacks. Students learn how to respond to grabs, punches, kicks, and other threatening situations, including against armed opponents.
.Breaking Techniques: Tang Soo Do practitioners often engage in breaking techniques, where they demonstrate their power and precision by breaking boards or other materials using various strikes and kicks. Breaking techniques showcase the practitioner’s ability to focus and apply power effectively.
.Philosophy and Ethics: Tang Soo Do emphasizes a code of ethics and philosophy. This includes principles such as respect, integrity, perseverance, and humility. The mental and ethical aspects of training are considered integral to the overall development of the martial artist.
.Kicking Techniques: Tang Soo Do places a particular emphasis on kicking techniques. Practitioners learn a variety of kicks, including front kicks, roundhouse kicks, side kicks, spinning kicks, and jumping kicks.
.Stances and Footwork: Tang Soo Do involves the practice of various stances and footwork patterns. Correct stances and footwork are crucial for balance, stability, and effective execution of techniques.
.Forms of Meditation: Tang Soo Do incorporates meditation or breathing exercises as part of the training, promoting mental focus, relaxation, and self-awareness.
.Fitness Training: Tang Soo Do includes exercises to develop strength, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and cardiovascular endurance.
